Consumer SaaSGoverned AIWeb + mobileFamily legacy

Almanac Leaf

A complete family-legacy journaling platform: parents capture stories, voice notes, and reflections for their children, share them now or lock them to unlock later, and a governed AI reflects it all back in the mentor voice they choose.

The challenge

A family's memory deserves a real product, not a notes app.

The stories and guidance a parent most wants to pass on are exactly the ones that slip away, scattered across phones, half-remembered, never written down. Generic journaling apps don't carry that weight. They can't hand a message to a child on their eighteenth birthday, they don't safely let AI help a parent reflect, and AI plus children plus grief is a place where a careless tool does real harm. This needed to be a real product: a private, durable home for a family's memory, an AI that helps without ever taking over or saying the wrong thing, and the full backbone of a SaaS underneath it.

What we built

A whole product, with an AI layer you can trust.

A full, live SaaS across web and mobile. Parents keep several kinds of journals and capture entries by voice (recorded, transcribed, and summarized), or by text and photo, and add a reflection. They share an entry with a specific family member through a private child portal, or seal it as a time capsule that opens on a date or when a child reaches a certain age. A governed AI reflects on entries and suggests gentle rules of life, always in one of several mentor voices the parent picks.

The AI layer is the part most builders get wrong, so it's the part we engineered hardest. A canonical catalog is the single source of truth for who each mentor is; a separate governed layer holds how each one talks and reasons; and above all of them sits one trauma-aware safety policy that no persona's style can override. The rest is built with the same care: per-user isolation on every table, media kept private and served through short-lived signed links, a server-side finalize step so an entry never ends up as audio with no transcript, and a capability model where plans map to real entitlements, not scattered feature flags.

01
A governed AI persona engineSix distinct mentor voices on an engine that separates who a persona is from how it behaves, with per-persona guardrails, versioning, and a safety layer that never bends. The tone can change. The safety can't.
02
Voice journaling with AI reflectionRecord an entry and it's transcribed, summarized, and reflected back, with a server-owned finalize path so a memory never ends up saved as audio with no words.
03
Legacy sharing and time capsulesShare an entry with one family member through a private, read-only child portal, or lock it as a time capsule that opens on a chosen date or age.
04
A real SaaS backboneMultiple journal types, custom journals, a capability-based plan model, and an admin dashboard with versioned releases, AI draft assist, and audited overrides.
05
Web and mobile, private by designA Next.js web app and an Expo mobile app, installable as a PWA, with per-user isolation, private media served by signed links, and a completed security audit.
